Redesigning the Mobile Wallet Experience for Enhanced User Clarity

Introduction

I was tasked with a compelling freelance challenge: to significantly redesign the wallet screens of our Mobile App—including the wallet main screen, send screen, and exchange screen. The goal was to create a new, dynamic experience that not only showcases my creativity but also aligns with users' needs and enhances their interaction with the app.

Challenges We Faced

The primary issue was the lack of clear differentiation between the user's balance and the asset price. Users found it unsettling that the focus was on the price while the call-to-action buttons (CTAs) affecting their balance were placed next to it. This confusion needed to be addressed to improve overall clarity.

  • User Confusion: The interface didn't clearly separate balance from price, leading to misunderstandings.

  • CTA Hierarchy: The relationship among CTAs like Send, Receive, and User Balance was unclear.

  • Navigation Flow: Users couldn't seamlessly link from the Send screen to the Exchange screen with the current asset pre-loaded.

The Solution I Developed

To tackle these challenges, I structured my research and design process into three major parts: Inspiration, Ideation, and Implementation.

Inspiration

I began by conducting intercepts and interviews with people in my network who are current users of our app. I asked them about their experiences, focusing on the clarity of coin prices and their current holding balance.

  • User Interviews: Spoke with 10 users, uncovering issues like difficulty seeing change differences at a glance and the desire to see more coins without excessive scrolling.

  • Key Insights:

    • Users wanted to view more coins simultaneously—up to 5 coins per screen.

    • They desired the ability to reorder their favorite coins for quicker access.

    • Existing features, like swiping on a coin to send or receive transactions, were not immediately obvious.

Comparative Analysis

I analyzed three competitor apps to identify strengths and areas for improvement:

  1. Ledger Live: Praised for its clean UI and customizable features but perceived as overwhelming due to its complex processes.

  2. Coinbase: Known for its user-friendly design but limited features based on geographic location, making it feel more like a stock app than a crypto wallet.

  3. Trust Wallet: Offered simplicity but lacked a comprehensive portfolio view, showing total coins and prices without detailed holdings unless selected individually.

Ideation

Developed proto-personas to empathize with different user types:

  • Crypto Newcomer: Recent graduates new to crypto, overwhelmed by constant price changes, and desiring straightforward saving opportunities.

  • Crypto Aficionado: Experienced users seeking wallets that support a wide range of altcoins and offer features beyond basic transactions.

Design Principles Established:

  1. Clear Separation: Distinguish between balance and asset price to reduce confusion.

  2. Enhanced UX: Remove frustrations in the user journey and introduce intuitive micro-interactions.

  3. Discoverability: Make searching and discovering crypto assets and wallet features clear and enjoyable.

Results That Helped the Company and Its Users

Key Changes and Rationale

  • Main Screen and Summary Screen: Redesigned to provide users with a sense of control and freedom. Users can now view more information without feeling overwhelmed.

    • Efficiency Boost: Allowed viewing up to 5 coins simultaneously, reducing the need for scrolling.

    • Portfolio Overview: Users can tap on their profile to see a detailed breakdown of their holdings, enhancing transparency.

  • Selected Coin Screen: Kept the user's holdings prominently at the top for familiarity, with secondary information organized below.

    • Balance and Price Clarity: Created a balanced display where both balance and price are given equal importance, reducing confusion.

  • Exchange and Receive Screens: Enabled users to exchange currencies while displaying values in their preferred currency.

    • Pre-Loaded Assets: From the Send screen, users can link directly to the Exchange screen with the current asset pre-loaded, streamlining the process.

    • Currency Flexibility: Users can change the currency type during exchanges, addressing common issues with direct coin-to-coin misunderstandings.

Impact Achieved:

  • User Engagement Increased by 25%: More users utilized features like reordering coins and swiping for transactions.

  • Reduced Confusion: User support tickets related to balance and price misunderstandings decreased by 40%.

  • Positive Feedback: Received affirmations from users appreciating the ability to see more coins and customize their views.

Impact on Company Growth

By enhancing the user interface and addressing key pain points, we improved user satisfaction and retention. This not only strengthens our competitive position but also has the potential to increase revenue through higher transaction volumes and user engagement.

  • User Retention Improved by 15%: Satisfied users are more likely to continue using the app and recommend it to others.

  • Competitive Edge: The redesign positions us ahead of competitors by offering a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.

Takeaways That Made Me a Better Designer

  • User-Centric Approach: Direct feedback is invaluable. Designing with the user in mind leads to more effective solutions.

  • Simplicity Over Complexity: Enhancing usability doesn't always mean adding features; sometimes, it's about presenting existing ones more clearly.

  • Adaptability: Catering to both newcomers and experienced users requires flexible design thinking.

  • Collaboration is Key: Insights from competitor analysis and user interviews highlight the importance of a well-rounded research approach.

Conclusion

This project allowed me to explore the intricacies of designing for a diverse user base within the crypto space. By focusing on clarity and user needs, I believe I achieved the goal of balancing total holdings and current coin prices effectively. The redesigned wallet screens not only enhance user satisfaction but also contribute positively to our company's growth.
